For a small piece of history :
The only Alsacian site classed as world wide heritage for
humanity : "the large island" of Strasbourg has been listed in 1988, as a
cultural site.
UNESCO describes it as follows :
« Surrounded by two arms of the Ill river, the
large island is the historical center of the Alsacian capital in a
restrained perimeter, it contains a group of monuments of remarkable quality
; the Cathedral, four ancient churches, the Rohan Palace, the ancient
residence of princes-bishops. These don't appear to be isolated monuments
but grouped in an ancient quarter representing the functionning of a
medieval town and the evolution of Strasbourg from the XVth to the XVIIIth
century.»
